Sourav Ganguly – Dada,Bengal Tiger….. – My Favourite

Posted by Ramkumar on July 9, 2009

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly turned 37 on Wednesday. The most successful Indian captain, Dada, retired form the Test cricket after Australia series in Nagpur. Though Ganguly still plays for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League, has expressed interests in heading the Board of Control for Cricket in India in future.

Sourav already made his debut as a commentator in last month’s ICC World Twenty20 Championships in England. Man of many ambitions Sourav Ganguly likes to achieve his target and on many occasions have had his say….

1246920

The Prince of Kolkata made his ODI debut for India in 1992 against West Indies but failed to impress and was immediately dropped. However, after a good run in the domestic cricket, Ganguly was recalled for the Test series against England and made a memorable debut at Lord’s with 131 runs which included 20 fours. Rahul Dravid also made his debut and scored 95 runs.
Sourav smashed another century (136) in the following Test at Trent Bridge and shared a 255-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar. From there on it was no looking back.

51635975

The Bengal Tiger was a regular feature in the One-day team from 1996 onwards but recorded his first century (113) only in 1997 against Sri Lanka at Colombo. Now, Sourav Ganguly was a prolific run-scorer for India in One-dayers and grabbed four consecutive Man of the Match awards against Pakistan in the Sahara Cup.

He was also effective with his right-arm medium bowling and took the career-best 5/16 against Pakistan. The fearless Bengal southpaw liked to attack consistently and developed a special liking for spinners

1067949

Unstoppable Sourav Ganguly was bestowed with Indian captaincy in 2000 and took India to great heights. Under Ganguly, India reached the finals of 2003 World Cup but lost to champions Australia. Ganguly-led India had a dream run between 2000-05 and won series in Australia and Pakistan. He was responsible for unearthing in talent like Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif and Harbhajan Singh among others.

It was during this period that he became the most successful Indian Test captain. However, Sourav’s personal form deteriorated and was subsequently dropped in October 2005

51529653

It was during the 2002 NatWest Series that cricket witnessed a football like celebration at Lord’s. After a heroic performance by Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif in chasing a huge 326 runs, Sourav Ganguly took off his shirt and celebrated the win in the balcony of Lord’s.

Later Ganguly clarified his behaviour saying that he was just mimicking the act performed by Andrew Flintoff during a tour of India.

56311697

Controversy and Sourav Ganguly walked all together. Ganguly was only responsible for bringing Greg Chappell as the coach for Indian team and they both made headlines for all wrong reasons. Chappell cited that Dada was unfit to lead the team in his letter to BCCI.

The dispute resulted in the removal of Ganguly as captain and even dropped from the ODI team in 2005. Ganguly said Chappell had asked him to step down and street protests followed in Kolkata; it was even discussed in the parliament

51896058

The lord of off-side made his comeback in 2006 during the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and performed well for India. Ganguly also reclaimed his place in the One-day team and played some useful knocks before being named in the squad for the 2007 World Cup. Sourav also scored his first double hundred against Pakistan in 2007.

83627139

Sourav Ganguly retired from international cricket with 7212 runs in Tests with 16 centuries and 11363 in ODIs with 22 tons. With all kind of records set by Ganguly on the field he is all set for off-field actions. Sourav is all set to contest against Jagmohan Dalmia in CAB elections. Reports also state that Dada may be the East Zone’s candidate for the post of BCCI president in 2014. So, get set for Dada’s another comeback.

India to host 2011 World Cup Cricket final

Posted by Ramkumar on April 28, 2009

April 28, 2009

India will host the final and one semi-final of the 2011 World Cup while Sri Lanka will stage the other semi-final, the tournament’s organising committee decided in Mumbai on Tuesday. India will host 29 of the 49 matches across eight venues, Sri Lanka will host 12 in three venues while Bangladesh will stage eight at two grounds as well as the opening ceremony on February 18, 2011.

The quarter-finals will be shared among the three neighbours, with Bangladesh hosting two. The committee also decided to shift the tournament secretariat from Lahore to Mumbai. BCCI’s chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty was appointed the event’s managing director in place of Pakistani banker Salman Butt. The organising committee, headed by ICC vice-president Sharad Pawar, will include an operations and planning group comprising Bangladesh official Mahboob Alam, Indian board secretary N Srinivasan, Sri Lanka’s Duleep Mendis and Shetty. Haroon Lorgat, the ICC’s chief executive, said IS Bindra, the special adviser to the ICC, would be a key person in the management of the World Cup.

He swept aside questions on whether Pakistan would boycott the World Cup in protest at being denied hosting rights, saying “we will cross the bridge when we come to it.” The ICC had to decide on the redistribution of Pakistan’s 14 matches after it removed the country from the list of hosts because the “uncertain political situation” would have made it difficult to “deliver a safe, secure and successful event” in Pakistan.

Lorgat said the security concerns of the various ICC members and the players would be addressed with the formation of a special committee headed by Shashank Manohar, the BCCI chief, to oversee security details. “The security arrangements are very important and a special committee… would put together security plans for the successful conduct of the World Cup in 2011,” he said.

“We are confident of organising a very successful World Cup,” Lorgat said.

The subcontinent last hosted a World Cup in 1996, when India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka shared the games. The final was in Lahore, where Sri Lanka beat favourites Australia in a famous win.

Srilankan cricketers injured in pakistani terror attack

Posted by Ramkumar on March 3, 2009

Cricinfo staff
March 3, 2009

Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack left five security men dead and will almost certainly lead to abandonment of the ongoing Test match.

While there have been terror strikes on the peripheries of cricket, this is the first time players have been directly targeted. The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five armed terrorists near Liberty market. Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said 12 masked terrorists fired at the Sri Lankan team bus. The gunmen shot at the wheels of the bus and also injured the driver. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed. The others players injured are Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavitana

“The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus,” Mahela Jayawardene told Cricinfo. “We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff], but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris.”

The Sri Lankan team had stepped in to fill a gap after the Indian government had barred the Indian team from touring Pakistan in the aftermath of the terror attack in Mumbai by Pakistan-based terrorists.
